Chapter 4
“You’re a support class?” The girl shook her head. “I’ve never heard of it. What job do you have?”
“Eh… White Mage?”
Whispering kicked up behind me while the woman gave me a look of disbelief. “White Mage? I’ve never heard of that either.”
“Really? Who casts healing spells?”
“Healing? So, you’re like a priest?” The girl’s eyes widened. “How can you be a priest and not be associated with the church?”
I let out a cough, realizing that my harmless line of questioning was starting to bring a lot of eyes on me that I didn’t want. I clearly needed to understand more about this world, and given the chatter behind me and the weird looks, I was in a bad position.
“Ah… about dungeons, is there any dungeon around?” I decided to change the subject.
The girl shrugged. “Without any combat prowess, there is no chance you’ll be able to make it in a dungeon. You might as well give up. You need to find a group of people willing to drag you around, but if all you can do is heal wounds, that is not something of value. I don’t see any party being willing to pick up a… what did you call it? White Mage.”
Seriously? Was I so entirely out of line that healing wasn’t valued in this world? Well, it wasn’t like I was planning on being teleported to another world in the first place. I was just trying to play a game. In that case, I was utterly screwed over if I had a job I couldn’t even use. Before I could say another word to the woman, there was a bell that started ringing. The bell wasn’t localized in the Adventuring Guild; instead, it was something that rang throughout the entire city.
The girl blinked. “Perhaps you’re luckier than you look? Your services might be needed soon enough.”
“Eh?” I asked as the Adventuring Guild suddenly exploded into action.
People started running around the room as if in a hurry. Some were grabbing their equipment and arming up. Others were passing messages. I looked around in confusion as the bustle seemed to grow. A glance out of a window revealed it was the entire city that appeared to have gone nuts. A single ring from this bell and now everyone was running around. People were ducking indoors and closing windows while others were running out with weapons drawn.
“Excuse me…” I finally got notice of the girl once again. “Can I ask what is going on?”
The girl shot me a look of disbelief but then shrugged a moment later. “The city is under attack. That is a call to arms. You should stay back here and heal the adventurers that return. Based on how many you heal, you’ll be paid accordingly.”
As soon as she finished explaining these things, she grabbed a bag full of equipment and headed out to deliver it to the front lines. Most of the other people also left too, heading for wherever the front lines were. Within a few moments, I was standing in the Adventuring Guild completely alone.
“Well… this wasn’t what I expected.”
Chapter 5
Since I’m in this world, I might as well go to the front lines,” I muttered to myself.
While it was true that the front lines were more dangerous than where I was now, I wanted to see what kind of villains were attacking. Was it the typical bandit attack? Every isekai seemed to start with a bandit attack. If I killed a bandit, would it make me a murderer in this world? What was I even thinking? How would I get about killing a bandit?
It wasn’t too difficult to find out the direction everyone was running to and from. I eventually came to a city wall that was only five feet tall. It might keep out some wild beasts, but for any pack of large animals or bandits, it wasn’t good enough. I could see a large group of people fighting on each side of the wall. I had to get closer to be able to see them. I was able to smell them first.
“Undead!” I let out a cry of surprise.
So, that was the bad guys that were attacking the village. It was a horde of undead monsters. Well… it was mostly zombies with one or two skeletons mixed in. Their flesh was hanging from their bodies, and they didn’t look very human. How to explain it… they weren’t like the zombies one would imagine, that is, re-animated humans. Instead, they looked more like fantasy zombies. Their skin was green, and it hung off their bodies loosely. They had claws on their hands, and they were quite powerful and damaging with each swipe. I saw a guy’s armor ripped off with a single swipe.
“Ahhh…” The guy screamed as he was carried back by two others, gripping his leg, which was now bleeding.
They laid him down next to the haystack. I didn’t do very well with blood, but I decided to head over to the hurting man anyway. That was really why I had come out. The only thing I could do was heal people, and I intended to do that if I could.
“Kid… get out of here!” The guy shouted. “The undead are going to overtake the wall soon.”
“Ah… let me heal you.” I responded.
“There is no time!” The guy sighed. “Damn it… I think I’m cursed.”
“I might as well try,” I argued, putting out a hand. “Weak Heal!”
I had never cast magic before in my life. I really had no clue how to do it. I could have completely embarrassed myself here by casting this spell only for the magic to do nothing. Part of the reason I was trying now is that no one was watching. This guy was injured and cursed and would probably die without my help, so I’d prefer that he saw my failure rather than for it to happen in a group full of scary men depending on me to heal their injured comrade.
If it turned out that my one and only skill was useless, then I would quickly run and hide in a barn until things settled down. I wasn’t a hero. I was just a guy trying to play a game. I still didn’t even know if the people I was interacting with were real or merely an elaborate NPC.
Upon saying the words, white light exploded from my hands. It shot out and carpeted the man’s leg. A few moments later, his wounds closed up. The man himself let out a breath, his jaw-dropping in surprise.
“It healed!”

“Oh, that was quick,” I said with delight. “In that case, Remove Curse!”
Another glow shot from my hands and the grey skin sitting somewhere around the wound immediately turned back to flesh color. Now that the wound wasn’t grey, it really looked like something that could get infected.
“Weak Heal!”
I cast the spell again, and this time the wound completely sealed before my eyes, leaving behind only the faintest trace of a scar. If the guy’s jaw was low before, it fell even more.
“I don’t believe it… that kind of healing would take a priest all day!”
“Well, I’m glad that I was useful.” I smiled. “You should be able to fight fine now.”
The guy blinked. “That’s right… I can’t spare a moment! Thanks! I owe you one!”
The guy grabbed his weapon and ran back into the fight, bolstering the front lines. What a brave guy. I applauded him for getting so close to the battle. I, for one, would not do the same. That fighting looked dangerous, and those zombie claws looked like they could kill. It was only a minute later when two men came back and dropped down someone who was hurt. One of the men carrying the wounded was the same guy I had just healed.
They ended up heading straight to my seat and leaving the guy on the ground at my feet.
“I’ll leave him to you!” The guy from before winked.
The other guy shot me an unsure look but still ran back to the line with his club out, aiming to bash a skull or two. Looking down at the man at my feet, he was a lot more damaged than the previous guy. Fortunately, it looked like he hadn’t been cursed.
“Weak Heal!” I cast on him, looking for the effect, and then cast again.
It took three times before the guy sat up. His gutted stomach where I could even see the hint of intestines was now as good as new. Weak Heal didn’t feel weak at all to me. In fact, it was quite incredible. The guy touched his stomach in disbelief, but after a moment he patted me on the shoulder and then ran back into the battle.
This time, I didn’t get a rest as another person was brought to me. By the time I was done with him, it had taken four casts, and I was feeling a bit dizzy. The guy stood up, and after a moment, he reached into his pocket and handed me a vial.
“That’s a mana potion. If you didn’t just heal me now, I’d probably have been out for a month. That’s worth at least this much!”
“Thanks!” I nodded as the guy headed back to the battle.
This was actually quite nice, but I decided to hold off drinking it. Although I felt a little dizzy, I had the feeling that I could pull off a few more spells. That, and I had a nagging suspicion.
Another guy was brought to me, and I started healing him too. He only took two Weak Heals and a Remove Curse.
